Bolivar Ferry just may be your favorite ride in the Galveston area. The ferry ride is free and it takes you between the east end of Galveston Island and Port Bolivar. The gulf breezes will enhance your sightseeing experience as you watch the big freighters gliding in and out of the Houston ship channel. While enjoying the trip you may encounter porpoises ahead of the boat, and if you plan to feed the seagulls off the stern be sure to bring plenty of old bread. It will all make for an adventure worth remembering.

They had two diesel powered ferries that held about 30 cars each. In 1985 the Texas Highway Department took over and they now operate six diesel powered ferries 24 hours a day. The ferries are 185 feet long and travel at about 12 knots. Each ferry can carry 52 standard size vehicles and 400 passengers. If you prefer to take the trip as a walking passenger, you will be directed to walk-on passenger boarding area. From Bay RV Park, travel west on FM 517 to State Highway 146, then south to Texas City.
